The Reason For Holiness

Have you ever wondered why God made you holy?

First, we know that God made you holy so that you might be set apart from the world, and He did this by placing you IN CHRIST. You may be interested to know that the Apostle Paul referred to being “in Christ” over 150 times in his letters. That is really significant. It means that it is very important for you to fully understand who you are in Christ. You are now a child of God, separate and distinct from the rest of the world. You are a member of His Royal Family. This means you are holy in His sight!

Now God not only set you apart FROM the world, but He also set you apart FOR Himself. The first reason He set you apart for Himself is that you might LIVE for Him.

You see, when you were saved a wonderful exchange took place. You gave your life to God, which might last 80 or 90 years, and in exchange He gave His life to you – His life is everlasting life! To me, that sounds like a great exchange. Don’t you agree? The point is that your life is no longer your own – your life belongs to God!

Yes, God wants you to live for Him, and Him alone. We can see this in the words of the Apostle Paul, when he wrote:

“Now the love of God controls us, having concluded this: that if One died for all, then all died. And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.” (2 Corinthians 5:14-15 NASV)

Now that is a powerful passage of Scripture! It said that when Christ died on the cross for all mankind, all mankind died in Christ. They were crucified with Him! He died as their substitute. He died in their place, and when He died, everyone died in Him. You can find this truth is several passages of Scripture.

When Christ died and rose again on your behalf, He did it so that you would no longer live just for your own desires, but that you would now live for Him. He is the Lord of your life, and He expects you to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him. This means that He expects you to walk in line with His Word, and be led by the Holy Spirit in everything you do.

There is another verse that ties right in with this last passage of Scripture. It is one of the first verses I memorized as a young teenager in my parents’ denominational Church. It is also a powerful verse of Scripture. This verse is found in the words of the Apostle Paul, when he wrote this about himself:

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 NKJV

Here Paul stated that when Christ was crucified, he was crucified with Him. This means that the old Paul died with Christ on the cross, and the life he now lived was actually Christ living in and through him. As you can see, this means that you are not only in Christ, but Christ is now in you!

Living a holy life means living for God, so that Christ might live out His life in you. You are no longer just living for yourself, your interests and your ambitions, but you are now living your life for Him – to seek out His destiny for your life. You are holy!

In my next posting we will look at the second reason God separated you for Himself.
