When you accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, did you purpose in your heart to live for God the rest of your life? If you did, then you fulfilled the first reason God set you apart for Himself, for God earnestly desires that His children live for Him and Him alone. This is what sets you apart from the rest of the world, and this is what makes you holy in God’s sight.
Now it is important for you to understand that there is a second reason why God has set you apart for Himself – He wants you to SERVE Him! You see, it is not enough just to live for God, He wants to find your place in the Body of Christ, which is your local Church, and serve Him in some area of ministry – and that includes every child of God!
Now you may ask: How do we serve Him? Simply put, we serve Him by serving one another. We find this in another verse that I memorized as a young teenager. The Apostle Paul wrote:
“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love SERVE ONE ANOTHER.” (Galatians 5:13 NKJV, emphasis mine.)
God has called us into the wonderful liberty of being a child of God, only we have to be careful not to use our liberty just to satisfy our own fleshly desires, but to always seek to serve those around us. Please understand that whatever you do for others, God takes it personally, as if you did it to Him. This is why it is so important to do everything with a cheerful, willing heart. God not only looks at what you do for others, He also looks at the attitude of your heart. A cheerful, willing heart is pleasing to God.
When it comes to serving God, we must be careful to serve Him, and Him alone. Consider the words of Jesus in the following passage:
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 6:24 NKJV)
Here Jesus is referring to mammon, or the wealth of the world. The devil, who is the spirit of this world, uses wealth to keep people under his control. When God’s people seek the fame and fortune of the world, they soon find themselves entangled in the snare of the enemy.
This is why Jesus said that you cannot get away with serving two Masters. When you try to serve two masters, you will find yourself wavering between the two. Sooner or later you will end up clinging to one and despising the other. How sad it is to see one of God’s people snared by the things of the world. This is why a holy life means serving God and God alone.
Now God wants to be your ONLY source. When you serve Him, He will supply every need you have, according to His riches in glory. It pays to serve God in more ways than you could ever imagine.
You are holy!
In my next post, we will look at the third reason why God has set us apart for Himself.
