Sanctified By The Word

If you are going to live a holy life, then you will have to understand what it means to be sanctified by the Word of God. Think about this:  It is because you live your life according to the Word that sets you apart from everyone one else in the world around you. You cannot underestimate the sanctifying power of God’s Word!

In The Gospel of John, you will find a wonderful record of the prayer Jesus made for those who would come to believe in Him.  That means He was praying for you!  Notice carefully what He said about the world in the following verse:

“Now I am no longer in the world, but THESE ARE IN THE WORLD, and I come to You.  Holy Father, keep them through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.”  (John 17:11 NKJV, emphasis mine)

Then He prayed:

“I do not pray that you should take them out of the world, but that you should keep them from the evil one. THEY ARE NOT OF THE WORLD, JUST AS I AM. NOT OF THE WORLD.” (John 17:15-16 NKJV, emphasis mine)

You see, even though you are IN the world, you are not OF the world. When you were saved, the Holy Spirit sanctified you and set you apart from the world. This is something you must clearly understood in your heart. You must see yourself separate from the world, even though you live in it every day of your life.

Now notice what Jesus prayed in the very next verse:

“Sanctify them by Your truth, Your word is truth.” (John 17:17 NKJV)

Not only has the Holy Spirit sanctified you, but there are others things that set you apart from the world – the Word of God is one of them!  When you heard the Gospel, it was the Word of God that revealed to you the truth that you were lost, and that believing in Jesus was the only way you could be saved. The moment you acted upon that Word, it set you apart from the rest of the people who are of the world. In the same way, it is what keeps you apart from the world every day of your life, because the spirit of this world is always trying to draw you back into it.

The Lord Jesus had more to say about this in another very familiar passage, when He said:

“If you abide in My word, you are my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  (John 8:31-32 NKJV)

As you can see from this passage, the key to being set free by the truth is to ABIDE in the Word of God. This means to immerse yourself completely in the Word.  It is through the Word of God that we come to understand who we really are in Christ. And it is through the Word of God that we see who God is. God is holy, and He wants us to focus our eyes on Him by meditating on His Word.

Now notice what the Lord Jesus said in this next verse of Scripture:

“You are already clean through the word which I have spoken to you.” (John 15:3 NKJV)

As you can see, the Word of Christ has a great cleansing effect upon a person’s life. By giving heed to the Word, and being a doer of the Word, it causes the filth of the world to fall away from you. You cannot underestimate the cleansing power of God’s Word! This is why you should meditate on it constantly, and it should be your greatest source of joy, in your walk with God.

You are holy!

In my next post we will look at what the Word says about worldliness.
