A Look At Worldliness

If you were brought up in the church, as I was, you may have heard of many warnings against the dangers of worldliness.

Let me ask you a question: What is worldliness?

Worldliness is simply to think like the world, talk like the world, act like the world, and hold the same values as the world. Worldliness is the exact opposite of holiness!

Now the word “worldliness” is not found in the Bible, but the Apostle Paul did address it, when he wrote:

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and WORLDLY LUSTS, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age.” (Titus 2:11-12 NKJV, emphasis mine)

Now the lusts of the world are basically the following:  The lust for things, the lust for power, and the lust for sexual fulfillment outside of marriage.

You see, when you were saved, the Holy Spirit set you apart from the world, so that you are no longer of the world. You are now of God, for God has set you apart for Himself as one of His peculiar people, who do not live their lives like the world, for they know that they are holy.

It is very important for you to understand that, when you were saved, God delivered you from the spirit of this world. The devil is the spirit of this world, and he is always trying to draw you back into the world in which you once lived. That is why God wants you to keep yourself away from every form of worldliness!

Now look at the sobering words of the Apostle Paul, as he described your deliverance from this world, when he wrote:

“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, IN WHICH YOU ONCE WALKED ACCORDING TO THE COURSE OF THIS WORLD, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.” (Ephesians 2:1-3 NKJV, emphasis mine)

This is why we must keep ourselves from the ways of the world, for the way of holiness leads to life, but the way of the world leads to death, and the spirit of this world is constantly trying to draw you back into it. This is why you must be renewed in your mind, and shake off all the things of the world, and live a life that is pleasing to God in everything you do. You are holy!

In the next post we will look at, “The Mind of a Saint,” and what it means to be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
