If you really want to live a holy life, you need to learn how to develop the fear of the Lord. It is directly linked to perfecting the holiness of God in your walk with the God.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us CLEANSE OURSELVES of from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, PERFECTING HOLINESS IN THE FEAR OF GOD.” 2 Corinthians 7:1 NKJV (emphases mine).
As you can see from this Scripture, the way to perfect the holiness of God in your life is to cleanse yourself and shake off all the filthiness of the world from your life. You can also see that you need to do this in the fear of God. This means you need to understand in your heart what it really means to fear the Lord!
Let me say this: Anyone who sins on purpose, knowing that they can just ask God for forgiveness later, has not developed the fear of the Lord in his or her life. As you grow in the Lord, you will find that the things you did as a spiritual babe will no longer be acceptable to you. In fact, you will find yourself shaking off everything that you know is not pleasing to God!
It is obvious that a spiritual babe will not walk at the same level of holiness as someone who is spiritually mature. When you were saved, the Holy Spirit set you apart from the world and made you holy in Christ. Now you have to grow in that holiness, and that means you also have to grow in the fear of the Lord, and have a clear understanding of it in your heart.
Now those who truly fear the Lord are always quick to repent, quick to forgive, and quick to obey. And there are two basic reasons why we are quick to obey God: First, because we LOVE God, and, second, because we FEAR Him. Love makes us want to obey God, and fear keeps us from ever doing anything that would be displeasing to Him. In fact, when we walk in the fear of the Lord, we have great joy, because we know that we are always doing the things that are pleasing in His sight, and that gives us a great sense of peace and security in Him.
Finally, there are great benefits to walking in the fear of the Lord. Look at the blessings given to those who fear God in the following verses:
“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh and strength to your bones.” Proverbs 3:7-8 NKJV.
“By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life.” Proverbs 22:4 NKJV.
“Who is the man who fears the Lord? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses. He himself shall dwell in prosperity, and his descendants shall inherit the earth.” Psalm 25:12-13 NKJV.
So many of us do not take these promises, and many like them, seriously, but we should. If you truly walk in the fear of the Lord, then all of these blessings can be yours. We all know that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” but it is also the beginning of every other blessing God has for you, including holiness.
In fact, walking in holiness and the fear of the Lord will open the door to all the other blessings you have desired in your life. It pays to live a holy life!
You are holy!
