The Image of the New Man

Your imagination is a wonderful thing, but let me ask you a question:

What image do you have of yourself, when you see yourself in your own mind?

If you have been following this Blog from week to week, you should now see yourself as a saint – someone who is holy!

As I have said before, when you were saved, the Holy Spirit set you apart from the world, and placed you in Christ. If you are in Christ, then you are holy. This is what took place when you became a new creation. The Apostle Paul wrote:

“Therefore, if anyone is IN CHRIST, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”      2 Corinthians5:17 NKJV (emphasis mine).

Now here is the glorious truth about this Scripture:  Today you are a new creation, which means that all of your past failures and sins have passed away, and today, you have been made completely brand new.  Yes, that means you can put all of your past behind you and start living a holy life today!  What you need to do is shake off your old life, the old you, and start afresh today.

The Apostle Paul wrote:

“That you PUT OFF, concerning your former conduct, THE OLD MAN which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be RENEWED in the spirit of your mind, and that you PUT ON THE NEW MAN which was created according to God, IN TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HOLINESS.” Ephesians 4:22-24 NKJV (emphasis mine).

This is the challenge that each of us faces as a believer in Christ – shaking off the old man!  This is something you need to do once and for all, because, according to Paul, the old man is dead. You are now a new man, a new creation, which God has created in the image of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. That is how God wants you to see yourself. That is why you need to be renewed in the spirit of your mind. You need to now see yourself in your imagination as a new creation made in the image of Christ – a holy child of God!

You can see this truth in the writings of the Apostle Paul, when he wrote:

“Do not lie to one another, since you have PUT OFF THE OLD MAN with his deeds, and have PUT ON THE NEW MAN who is renewed in ACCORDING TO THE IMAGE OF HIM (that is, CHRIST) WHO CREATED HIM.” Ephesians 3:9-10 NKJV (emphasis mine).

This means that, as a new creation, you were created in the image of Christ. This is the image of the new man – Christ Himself!  As a result, you have to consider the old person that you used to be, dead, and shake him or her off of your life forever.

Then Paul wrote:

“Therefore, as the elect of God, HOLY AND BELOVED (that is who you are right now) PUT ON tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.” Colossians 3:12-13 NKJV (emphasis mine).

In other words, as a new creation made in the image of Christ, you now act like Christ in everything you say and do.

Finally, Paul wrote:

“But PUT ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” Romans 13:14 NKJV (emphasis mine).

The mistake many believers make is that they put Christ on like their Sunday clothes. As soon as they come home from Church, they take Him off and hang Him up in the closet until they go back to Church on the following Sunday. They are more comfortable wearing the “old man” during the week.

The secret to living a holy life is to shake off the old man and put Christ on once and for all, and never take Him off again. When people see you, they should see Christ in everything you say and everything you do.

You are holy!

Next week we will look at:  “Christ’s Love for His Holy Bride”.
