The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Holiness. This means that if you want to live a holy life, then you will need to develop a deep, personal relationship with Him. After all, He is holy, and He has been sent to help you live a holy life. In fact, He will lead you, guide you and teach you how to walk in a manner that is worthy of your calling, as a holy child of God.
If you recall, it was the Holy Spirit who first set you apart from the world, when you were saved, and placed you in Christ. He is the One who sanctified you and made you holy. He is also the One who helps you live a holy life today. He will always lead you on the path of holiness.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“But we are bound to give God thanks always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for SALVATION THROUGH SANCTIFICATION BY THE (HOLY) SPIRIT and belief in the truth.” 2 Thessalonians 2:13 NKJV (emphasis mine).
Remember this: The way of holiness leads to life, but the way of the world leads to death.
The writer of Hebrews made an amazing statement, when he wrote:
“Pursue peace with all men, AND HOLINESS, WITHOUT WHICH NO ONE WILL SEE THE LORD.” Hebrews 12:14 NKJV (emphasis mine).
Now you can understand why it is so important to know that you are holy in Christ. It is a central part of your salvation! The Holy Spirit not only started your journey of holiness, but
He will guide you every step of the way until you see Christ face to face. In fact, don’t try to live a holy life in your own strength, learn to depend upon the Holy Spirit!
Jesus revealed the vital role of the Holy Spirit in your life, when He said:
“However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, HE WILL GUIDE YOU INTO ALL TRUTH; for He shall not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come .” John 16:13 NJKV (emphasis mine).
The Holy Spirit is a person, and Jesus revealed that He will be your constant companion on your journey of holiness. If you are keenly aware of His presence and tune your ear to his voice, He will guide you into all truth, which means He will show you how to follow the path of holiness. Jesus said that He will even show you things to come!
Now the Apostle Paul explained the role of the Holy Spirit in living a holy life this way:
“If you walk in the Spirit, you will not fulfill the lusts (desires) of the flesh.” Galatians 5:14 NKJV.
In others words, if you pay attention to the leading of the Holy Spirit in everything you do, you will not heed the desires of your flesh. Now your flesh is ruled by your five senses: the things you see, hear, smell, taste and touch. These senses govern the desires of your flesh. As you know, you are especially moved by what you see. Yes, your flesh lusts after what it sees, but if you are guided by the Holy Spirit alone, you will only desire the things He shows you to desire. Does that make sense to you?
This works not only in spiritual things, but also in practical day-to-day situations. If you will listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit, He will help you in your job, and even in your purchases. He will also help you in your relationship with your spouse or your children. He will impart to you wisdom, knowledge and understanding, so that you can conduct yourself wisely in the things of life. He will always cause you to follow the path of righteousness and holiness. You can trust Him in every situation!
This is one of my favorite passages about trusting God:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not to your own understanding. IN ALL YOUR WAYS acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV (emphasis mine).
Trusting God is an exercise of your faith. God expects you to trust Him with ALL of your heart – you need to teach your heart to do that! The next verse tells you to acknowledge God in ALL of your ways, and He will direct your paths. The way He directs your path is through the Holy Spirit. If you want to live a holy life, then you need to have some level of intimacy with the Holy Spirit, so that you will recognize His voice and promptings in your spirit.
When teaching on holiness and sanctification, the Apostle Paul wrote:
“Therefore he who rejects this (instruction on holiness) does not reject man, but God, who has given us His HOLY Spirit.” 1 Thessalonians 4:8 NKJV (emphasis mine).
What Paul was trying to emphasize here is that God’s Spirit is a HOLY Spirit. He is the one who dwells within you, and He is the one who has sanctified you, and made you holy. As long as you yield to the Holy Spirit in your life, He will always lead you in the path of holiness.
You are holy, dear saint!
