When it comes to our conflict with the enemy, the greatest battlefield we encounter is in the realm of our imagination. You see, when you became a new creation in Christ, God’s design was to create within you the image of Christ. That is how you should see yourself – just like Jesus!
“For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.” Romans 8:29 NKJV.
If you ever wondered what God predestined you to be, now you know. He predestined those who would believe to be conformed to the image of His Son. And He has placed that image in you through the intimate knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. When you were first saved, you only had a glimpse of that knowledge. Now He wants you to grow in the knowledge of His Son, so that you may grow into the fullness of who He is.
In this regard, you may understand a little better, the words of the Apostle Peter when he wrote:
“You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; BUT GROW IN THE GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.” (see 2 Peter 3:17-18, emphasis mine).
Yes, we must always guard ourselves from turning away from steadfastly following the Lord. Instead of being drawn into the wickedness of the world, God wants us to increasingly grow up in the knowledge of His Son. He wants us the develop a clearer and clearer image of who we are in Christ. This can only come through the revelation of the Holy Spirit, as we meditate on God’s Word.
This knowledge that we are meant to develop is twofold: knowledge of who He is, and who we are in Him. Both are important! Does that make sense to you?
Consider the following words of the Apostle John:
“Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; BECAUSE AS HE IS SO ARE WE IN THIS WORLD.” 1 John 4:17 NKJV (emphasis mine).
That last statement is very powerful: as He is so are we in this world! Our identity must be so infused in Christ that we must be just like Him in this world. We must walk as He did, talk as He did, and minister to others as He did. This can only be accomplished by developing the image of Christ in us, and growing in the knowledge of who we are in Christ.
In is the glory of Christ in you that shines out to those who are in this world of darkness. When you allow Christ to minister though you to others, then His light shines upon their lives. This is what Jesus meant when He said:
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify you Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 NKJV.
Whether you are stretching out your hand to minister to the sick, or offer a cold glass of water, you are allowing Christ to shine through you. That is the image you should have in your heart, and that is how you should picture yourself at all times.
Now this the very thing that the enemy desires to defeat in our lives. He does everything going in his power to tear down the image of Christ in us. He does not want Christ to shine out of us to those he has imprisoned in darkness. This is why he is constantly firing his dart of doubt and unbelief into our minds. He is trying to destroy the image of Christ in us. This is why we need to increasingly grow in our knowledge of who Christ is and who He is in us.
You are holy, dear saint!
