Your Teacher the Holy Spirit

Do you know the Holy Spirit?

Just before His death, Jesus introduced His disciples to Someone who was going to take His place. For three years He had taught them about the Kingdom of Heaven, and He had been at their side through every situation and difficulty that they had encountered. Now He was about to leave them. But He was not going to abandon them, He was going to send them another Helper, just like Him. He told His disciples:

“I will pray the Father and He will give you another Helper, that He might abide with you forever – the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; BUT YOU KNOW HIM, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17 NKJV, emphasis mine.)

Notice Jesus said that the disciples already knew the Holy Spirit. They knew Him, because He had helped them heal the sick and cast out demons. The difference was that they were going to come into a new relationship with the Holy Spirit. Jesus would no longer be there to teach them, He was going to return to Heaven. They were going to have to look to the Holy Spirit to teach them about everything they needed to know from that day forward. Jesus explained it this way:

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” (John 14:26 NKJV)

Jesus wanted them to know that the Holy Spirit would not only teach them new things, but also bring to their remembrance everything He had taught them. There were so many more things He wanted to tell them, but they didn’t have the spiritual maturity to handle them yet. They would have to grow in their understanding, so that the Holy Spirit could teach them more.

We also need the Holy Spirit to teach us how to grow up spiritually. God doesn’t want us to just grow older, He wants us to grow up into the fullness of the stature of His Son. He wants us to be just like Jesus! That is why He sent the Holy Spirit to be our Teacher. This why Jesus said:

“He (the Holy Spirit) will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and He will declare it to you.” (John 16:14 NKJV, words in parentheses mine.)

The role of the Holy Spirit is simply to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He teaches us how to act like sons and daughters of God, so that we will walk and talk just like Jesus. He wants Jesus to shine out of us, so that the world can see Jesus living in us! Isn’t that wonderful to know?

This what the Apostle Paul had to say about the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives:

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.” (1 Corinthians 2:12 NKJV)

God doesn’t want us to get our wisdom from the world. The devil is the spirit of this world, and his plot is to always try to entice us back into the world. If he can get us to think like the world, then he can also get us to act like the world. If we are not careful to guard our hearts and minds, we can end up living like the rest of the world. This is why God doesn’t want us to get our wisdom from the world, but from Him alone!

On the other hand, if we develop a close relationship with the Holy Spirit, He will teach us how to walk in line with God’s Word. He will also show us how to walk in the wisdom of God. He will lead us in paths of righteousness and holiness, far away from the direction the world is going.

God has sent the Holy Spirit, so that we might excel in the things of the Kingdom of Heaven. We don’t know all the things that God has reserved for us in His Kingdom, that is why the Apostle Paul wrote:

“But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.’ But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:9-10 NKJV)

We only have a glimpse of what God has in store for us. There is so much more to know and understand. It is only through the revelation of the Holy Spirit that we can discover the deep things of God. This is why the Holy Spirit must become our Teacher!

You are holy, dear saint!
